Job Summary:

The Laboratory Manager is a clinical laboratory scientist with 24 hour responsibility for the financial, technical and scientific oversight of the laboratory. This includes the departments of chemistry, hematology, serology, microbiology, urinalysis, coagulation, transfusion medicine, point of care testing and pathology services. The laboratory manager supervises all laboratory personnel, including Technical Supervisor, Lead Clinical Laboratory Scientist, Clinical Laboratory Scientists, Medical Laboratory Technicians, Phlebotomists and Clerks. This position reports to the Laboratory Director of Laboratory Services, while working with the laboratory Medical Director to maintain excellent clinical standards.


Essential Job Duties:

  • Provides medical laboratory diagnostic and therapeutic information, products and services by establishing specimen preparation procedures, developing and implementing analytical procedures, evaluating laboratory information, consulting with the Medical Director, etc.
  • Maintains medical laboratory equipment performance by establishing quality standards, developing operations, quality and troubleshooting procedures, and ensuring staff compliance.
  • Under the direction and/or consultation with the Medical Director, the Laboratory Manager will develop and implement quality system that ensures regulatory and accrediting readiness at all time.
  • Resolves problems by consulting with the Medical Director, and/or technical staff; attending committee meetings.
  • Maintains clinical laboratory staff results by counseling and disciplining employees; planning, monitoring, and evaluating job results.
  • Ensures that billings for services are current by monitoring productivity standards and workload volume; provide the CBO with service codes.
  • Assess and evaluate new programs, tests, methods, instrumentation, and procedures by investigating alternatives, preparing proposals, and monitoring progress.
  • Integrates the department’s services with the hospital’s primary functions. Provides ongoing progress reports (verbal and/or written) to the Lab Administrative Director, of departmental activities that contribute to achieving the hospital’s mission, vision, values, goals, policies and procedures.
  • Monthly reviews all laboratory departments’ quality control, preventive maintenance, analyses reportable ranges, reference ranges, proficiency testing, and policies and procedures and verifies they have been reviewed and action documented by the Lead CLS.
  • Works closely with the staff to investigate and report incidents or instrument problems, effectiveness of the LIS and assess for improvements that can be implemented. Justifies equipment, space and other resources needed for the department, and monitors utilization of equipment and supplies, and submits a report to the lab administrative director.
  • Supports the hospital’s compliance and safety program by regularly monitoring the work area and reporting all compliance/safety issues in an appropriate and effective manner.
  • Assesses the staff’s competence and compliance to policies of the laboratory and pathology departments and ensures continued competency and compliance through staff education, development, and counseling.
  • Schedules staff and holds department meetings and encourages and organizes staff to work as a team to develop employee satisfaction goals and their implementation.
  • Works closely with the HR department to comply with MHG’s hiring process.

 Leadership Functions:

  • Provides administrative support for hospital by effectively manage financial resources within the area(s) of responsibility including labor management, productivity, supplies, and other resources.
  • Ensures optimal provision of services through sound personnel management.
  • Demonstrates leadership skills including the ability to plan, prioritize, organize, analyze, execute on multiple tasks and in collaboration with other hospital departments, providing direction and setting expectations consistent with the goals of the organization.
  • Demonstrates behaviors commensurate with the Vision, Mission and Values and Behavioral Standards of the organization.


  • Effective written and verbal communication skills; able to communicate with various individuals both inside and outside the organization; and able to understand and create reports/presentations/proposals.
  • Possesses strong leadership skills including the willingness to pursue roles with increasing levels of accountability, coaching, teaching, inspiring, forging alliances, and collaborating to negotiate resolution to issues.
  • Ability to work under stressful situations.
  • Proficient with computer systems including but not limited to MS Office.

Job Requirements


  • A Bachelor’s Degree in Clinical Science from an accredited institution and three to five years’ experience in a hospital clinical laboratory setting with moderate to high complexity testing, including at least two years of progressively responsible experience in leadership roles.



  • Current California Clinical Laboratory Scientist license
