Job Description and Job Responsibilites

Job Title:  Inpatient Coder

Job Summary:

Performs under the supervision of the HIM Director/The Medical Record Coder is responsible for timely review of patient in order to identify an appropriate selection of codes which will accurately reflect the reason for admission, extent of care received, and level of severity of illness. Coder is further responsible for insuring that all data elements required for federal and state reporting are collected, abstracted and included in the patient’s demographic record. To include any and all other duties assigned by the HIM Director and or Supervisor.

Essential Job Duties: 

  • Codes and abstracts all discharge record using the approval coding conventions and or DRG/APR-DRG standard nomenclature into the designated computer system

  • Demonstrates a consistent level of performance and steady level of productivity by providing a consistent effort as evidence by un-coded record levels and dates system

  • Accurately codes the hospital record by utilizing the information documented in the medical record

  • Has the ability to accurately code all patient types

  • Follows process for Physician Queries and follow up

  • Maintains the bill hold according to the do not final bill days set by the CFO

  • Maintains an average coding accuracy rate of 95% and productivity standards as benchmarked by AHIMA

  • Performs other duties assigned to me by my Director/Supervisor

Job Requirements

Education/Experience:

  • High school graduate or some college course work

  • Knowledge of Anatomy and Physiology

  • CPT, Coding Clinic Guidelines, DRGs, MS-DRGs

  • APR-DRGs, ICD-9 and ICD-10

  • Prefer at least 3 to 4 years of current experience in an acute care setting

Licensure/Certifications:

  • Certified Coding Specialist (CCS)
