Job Description and Job Responsibilites

Chief Nursing Officer

A Registered Nurse who serves as the Nurse Executive with a 24 hour responsibility for clinical and administrative management of nursing services.   Serves as a member of the Senior Executive, participating in the planning and evaluation of hospital operations.    Supervises all nursing services personnel including nursing directors, administrative nursing supervisors, RN’s, LVN’s, CNA’s, all clerical staff and other ancillary nursing personnel involved in the delivery of patient care.  Oversees the development and implementation of the nursing plan of care, policies and objectives for the Division of Nursing.   The CNO reports to the Chief Executive Officer.

Essential Job Duties: 

  • Ensures compliance of patient care services division on all state laws and regulatory requirements for nursing and ensures compliance.
  • Establishes short and long term goals for:  recruitment, retention and training of nursing personnel.
  •  Establish the operating budget for the nursing division, including staffing plans.   Monitors and controls performance against budget.
  • Evaluates the performance of various nursing departments and performance of nursing directors. Encourages and maintains open lines of communication with and between employee groups, medical staff, patients and their family members.
  • Attends promptly to administrative details of position including signing of documents, preparation of reports, review of contracts, tracking of workplans, etc.
  • Evaluates overall nursing services to assure consistency with objectives and standards and maintain the highest level of patient care
  • Effectively manage financial and human resources within the area(s) of responsibility and in collaboration with other hospital departments, providing direction and setting expectations consistent with the goals of the organization.
  • Serve as a role model for the Vision, Mission and Values of the organization

Communication/Knowledge:

  • Possess strong leadership skills including the ability to plan, prioritize, organize, analyze, execute on multiple tasks and adapt to changing environment.
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills; able to communicate with various individuals both inside and outside the organization; and able to understand and create reports/presentations/proposals.
  • Possesses strong leadership skills including the willingness to pursue roles with increasing levels of accountability, coaching, teaching, inspiring, forgoing alliances, and garnering situations.
  • Ability to work under stressful situations.
  • Proficient with computer systems including but not limited to MS Office.




Job Requirements

Education/Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Nursing or equivalent, Masters degree preferred
  • At least 5 years of current experience in nursing management in an acute care setting

Licensure/Certifications:

  • Current RN licensed in good standing by the California State Board of Nursing
  • Current BLS for Health Care Provider card
