Clinical Laboratory Assistant I works under the supervision of a licensed Clinical Laboratory Scientist, obtaining patient specimens, providing technical and clerical assistance as directed. Rotates into one or more shifts as assigned. Position involves all aspects of specimen processing and handling. Participates in training of all personnel and helps with method development as needed. Supervises clerical staff. Provides support to technologists in problem solving and corrective action workup. Is compliant with and helps enforce laboratory policies and performs tasks which are within legal limits of practice established by State and Federal Law. Primarily responsible for phlebotomy, processing finished reports, clerical duties and microbiological specimen processing.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE: Requires at least 3 months prior Phlebotomist/Lab Assistant experience.

LANGUAGE SKILLS: Must be able to read, analyze, and interpret common scientific and technical information, and be easily understood through verbal communication in the English language. Must be able to prepare documentation in a manner that conforms to prescribed style and format, and to respond to common inquiries or complaints from customers, regulatory agencies, or members of the business community. Bilingual skills (Spanish) preferred.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS: Must have California State Phlebotomist Certificate. Must possess current CPR certification.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Is occasionally required to stand, walk, sit, use hands to finger, handle, or feel, reach with hands and arms, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl, talk or hear; and taste or smell. The employee is regularly required to lift, push and/or pull weights in excess of 10 pounds. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move more than 100 pounds, with assistance. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.

WORK ENVIRONMENT: Is occasionally exposed to toxic or caustic chemicals, risk of electrical shock, and vibration. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
